Muse2 Markers View not openning - angelsguitar - 07-04-2012

When I open MusE 2 and click on View - Marker View, the markers window doesn't open. I noticed that OpenOctave MIDI, which is based on MusE's source, has the same markers window glitch. May it be that I'm missing a library or something?

I'm using Lubuntu 12.04 with KXStudio repos. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Interesting, it works here, will give it a try to find the cause.
Is there no way to get the MarkerView to show?
/Robert

Re: Muse2 Markers View not openning - angelsguitar - 07-04-2012

No, I tried different switches when starting MusE, but nothing. I talked to FalkTX from KXStudio about this. He doesn't have this problem. However, he runs KDE on his machine; I'm running LXDE. I believe it may be a missing library or something, but I can't identify which.

Re: Muse2 Markers View not openning - spamatica - 07-04-2012

I guess you are using the prebuilt muse version from falktx?

Would you care to try and build it from source?
There is small test you could do in muse/marker/markerview.cpp.
Around line 284 there is a mention of a workaround for certain window managers, it would be a good test to try and comment this out.
//show();
//hide();

It is not out of the question that this fix is no longer good

Re: Muse2 Markers View not openning - angelsguitar - 07-15-2012

Yes, I was using FalkTX's prebuilt version. But I force-installed the default version that ships with Ubuntu Precise, and the problem persists, so I believe the problem is not on the package itself.

I compiled it from source using the modification you described, but still can't open the markers window <!-- sSad --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_sad.gif" alt="Sad" title="Sad" /><!-- sSad -->

Hi.

I guess like our pesky markers window still has issues.
It has always seemed to have a mind of its own despite being
the same kind of window as the other editors.
But I know that we handle this window slightly differently than the others.
Possibly some funky coding in there still.

Depending on the distro, I have seen where MusE would start with the
markers window always visible but in a 'dead' state.
However it was always possible to hide it then show it again, properly.
But it seemed lately the issue had apparently been fixed.
Have you tried more than one time in a row to open the window?
Does the menu checkmark get set despite the window not opening?
That would be a good clue.

We'll keep our eye on this and any more info you can add would help.
If time permits I can try to compile MusE for your distro.
But I am using KUbuntu + KDE here with no problems.

One other thing you can try is, we added an option switch -u
"Ubuntu/unity workaround: don't allow sharing menus and mdi-subwins."
Although that was for menu problems.
Maybe there are issues with the Unity desktop, if you are using it?

Tim.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried to open the window more than one time in a row as you suggested, but still can't see it. The menu checkmark does get set when I click on it.

Although I'm using LXDE, I tried the -u switch, but still no marker window visible.

Re: Muse2 Markers View not openning - term356 - 09-01-2012

OK This bug is confirmed here with Lubuntu 12.04, with the 2.0 RC2 package.

We have a Lubuntu CD at work. After some long horrible failed attempts at running
Lubuntu on an old laptop, I have a large 160GB junker ATA hard drive
(with some bad sectors) with which I can play with various distro partitions
on my main PC (before the drive might conk out).

So... Is it an LXDE + MusE issue?
I'll try to verify with Linux Mint LXDE Edition (of which we also have the CD).
Or has someone verified already with Linux Mint LXDE?

But I'll try to set up Yet Another KDevelop Build Chain on Lubuntu to see what's going on.

Can you please enter an official bug report in the tracker if not already done, and mention
that it's verified by me.
I'd say it's a fairly serious bug especially if LXDE is involved meaning other distros.

Thanks.
Tim.

Re: Muse2 Markers View not openning - term356 - 09-02-2012

I'm afraid you're going to have to change desktops for now.

Results (these are ALL on the Lubuntu OS):

Standard fresh Lubuntu or OpenBox login: MusE FAIL on multiple fronts:
Markers Editor rarely opens. Yes, I got it to open! For the life of me
I cannot determine the factors involved in making the Markers Editor
appear. (In all my tests I concentrated on altering/tweaking only one thing -
our new MDI settings.) I did this, did that, and magically it started appearing
and closing properly, but after changing the MDI settings it would fail again.

In fact, depending on our MDI settings I also could not see the Arranger at all!
I think I was able to pin that down at least.

When windows were absent I noted that I could sometimes see the proper
menus, but that was iffy, depended on various stuff.

Even WORSE: Tested MESS synthesizers (no installed DSSI-VST synths ATM):
Most of the synth windows fail to appear as well, even though the checkmarks
were clearly set.

Whew, this is... We do some custom stuff but I don't think we're doing anything
too radical here - I checked the code and ran GDB and we simply call
setVisible(true/false) on the window, and yes it's called every time I toggle
the Markers checkmark. And yet nothing happens...

Now to test the Display Manager...
I installed the KUbuntu metapackage: It asked whether I wanted to remain
with LightDM or switch to KDM, I chose KDM.

The login screen is now KDE instead of the original Lubuntu login screen.
Several new desktop choices now appear at login.

I chose 'Lubuntu' desktop from the login manager.
Tested MusE: Markers et al. still FAIL. OpenBox, KDE with OpenBox or other flavours FAIL as well.

Then I re-logged in with standard KDE desktop, and tried MusE: Success! Totally.

Then I installed Ubuntu Desktop (the Unity thingy) : Success! Almost totally:
Wow, I never tried Unity before - We got Menu problems... issues.
This might be what would happen to us on a Mac OS?

I tried Metacity but it just froze, I couldn't get past the login screen.

Let's see did I forget any other listed desktops... Well, you get the idea.
Also I may try XUbuntu Desktop as well, I'm curious now whether it will work.

-----
As a side note: Just my bad luck: Execute a debug of MusE in KDevelop on Lubuntu
and all it does is HANG - I waited a long time. Then I tried gdb with MusE in a terminal,
and I think I found out why:

/build/buildd/gdb-7.4-2012.04/gdb/infrun.c:3189: internal-error: handle_inferior_event: Assertion `inf' failed.
A problem internal to GDB has been detected,
further debugging may prove unreliable.
Quit this debugging session? (y or n) y

Crud. Unbelievable. I can breakpoint in KDevelop at places near MusE startup but after that,
continuing just HANGS.

Tim.

Re: Muse2 Markers View not openning - angelsguitar - 09-02-2012

Well, that's bad news <!-- sCry --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cry.gif" alt="Cry" title="Crying or Very Sad" /><!-- sCry -->

But if it helps, this problem has only ocurred to me when running (L)ubuntu. I also ran Muse 2 on Arch (currently don't have Arch installed, though, my drive crashed a few days ago), and everything worked fine; the Markes View opened without problems. I'm not an expert in programming, but perhaps there's a problem or conflict in the way Ubuntu compiles or links some key libraries that Muse uses. i don't know, just a guess.

I suggest you try running Muse on other distros as well, if possible. Maybe you can compare functionality and find out the root of the problem.
